does someone make a flow meter that clamps on to pipe without penetrating the pipe?

We have used Greyline meters. They can be used in partially filled pipe as well as full flow. Clean or dirty liquid meters available. Quite reliable and can be set in many languages as well as units of measurement. Engage these people for more info. Cheers.

Yes - a German company Endress & Hauser make a fantastic range of instrumentation including a range of "clamp on" ultrasonic flow meters - this is the Irish website for the company. www.ie.endress.com

If the pipe is nice and the fluid contains a moderate amount of particulates then a Dynasonic.

If it is damn nasty or dead clean then a Mag meter or venturi/DP meter.

It depends upon the conditions of the fluid, installation environment and, purpose.

What is the fluid

What are the fluid conditions (Temp/Pressure/Velocity Range)

What is the accuracy needed

What is the installation environment

What power is available

I would take exception to not considering ultrasonic transit time technology for "dead clean" liquid flow rates. That is transit time's sweet spot. Mags can choke on pharma grade DI water.

Fluid flow rates with a moderate amount of particulate is generally measured with doppler ultrasonic technology.

Of course mag meters choke on pharma water. There ain't enough conductive stuff left in there to do the electro part of the detection!

Anyway, the OP wanted a non-invasive type. If you can do a mag meter non-invasively then you'd better patent it before Dodgy Dave and I nick the design. <Cough, sneeze> Sorry, Mate. I can't shift this cold. <Splutter>
