Steel Ropes / Steel Heart Ropes

10/20/2010 3:21 AM

Anyone able to suggest simple methods to calculate void space in steel ropes before / after being swaged?. Obviously, this can be calculated from sampling displacements but it would be useful to generically calculate for different numbers of layers and for torsionally balanced ropes different lay directions as well as lay lengths and wire sizes. Interested if anyone has thought about this?

The Oklahoma road improvement agency is placing these types of Steel rope in to avoid head-on collisions on I-35 near Stillwater and turnpike 412/65. They measure equal distance apart, dig the holes ,pour in the concrete and then add the 4 or 5 foot metal stakes with spaces for threading the ropes through and come back later to add the steel rope taken off of these large spools and tighten them up with what looks like a hand held ratchet, they put reflectors on them, the new bluish white ones As they went along they started bunching them towards the top so that there was enough room near the ground for Deers to crawl under, the deers were piling up dead at first, not aware a fence was suddenly there. Also leaving overlap zones with a walk through space, Using tall orange road cones to alert wildlife of the change for about three months seems to help.DS

Generaly most wire ropes after being swaged have less than reg. rope spacings..1.25" reg wire rope was swaged to 7/8" so trying to find a cacluation for that would also depend on the amount and speed of the compressive forces on the rope during the swaged process. How many passes and speed are factors and what kind of rope...6*26//6*36//
