Magnetism - Units of Measure

03/15/2007 5:12 AM

Could some one please give me all the units of measuring various quantirties we come across in the study of magnetism. Old and new units side by side will be of immense help, so shall be their inter-relationship.

No offence intended Nachi , but wouldn't it be better to get yourself a technical data book or find this stuff yourself on a general web search. You may get lucky and find a kind soul to locate and type in all that for you , but I wouldn't hold your breath waiting !

Nice try ! When you've done the sensible thing , post a summary and this thread may end - you may even help others."Giving is it's own reward".I think you are quite capable of finishing what you have started here. All the best.

there are lots of units in electromagnetic. the main often use unit is MKgSA system. in fact you can find their relationship at your textbook.

Historically there have been a lot of unit systems used for magnetism, but these days you really need to know about only two (SI and Gaussian), and to use only one (SI). SI units are the ones that engineers use, and usually physicists use. Physicists sometimes use the Gaussian system, largely for historical reasons. The SI system is also known as MKSA. I strongly recommend using SI units ONLY.

The main SI units are:

Magneto Motive Force - Ampere (or Ampere turn)

Magnetic flux - Weber

Magnetic field strength - Ampere/metre

Inductance - Henry

Reluctance - Ampere/Weber

Far better, read a good text book. Even a good general physics book will be useful.

Magneto Motive Force - Ampere (or Ampere turn)

I didn't think this sounded exactly right (although you did say "Ampere turn"). I had always thought of Magnetomotive force as voltage, so I looked it up on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetomotive_force

Go to www.amazon.com and find the Penguin dictionary of science or the dictionary of electronics both have loads of useful info.

The following link provides a fairly complete summary:

Hi TStaples,

Gee thanks. This is a great help. Not all the text books have this kind of info.
