Old Emery

10/22/2010 1:07 AM

Years ago an old timer took some black sand I had and wet it with water and then drained it. He then took and dropped a few drops of this clear odorless liquid which then spread quickly like gasoline and instantly cleaned and exposed the gold. Any idea what that was?

Manganese can deposit on some things, like the way a pearl is made. Sulfuric acid or the like might be used to remove it. It's not my field, but I did work for a factory that processed manganese nodules, and they used acid in the process.

The black manganese nodules were from Hawaiian waters, not far from you in Alaska.
