GPS Tracking, Non Motorized Trailer.

10/23/2010 1:11 AM

I have had 3 small car trailers stolen, is the technology available to put a GPS device on the next trailer I buy (in case it gets stolen) so the police or myself could track it and locate it and maybe recover it. Thanks, Larry Moore

You'd need a power source on the trailer.

The product LoJack (not an endorsement) comes to mind, but it may be more expensive that the trailer.

That sounds like a wonderful government solution - maybe the can give a tax credit or rebate on it.

There are no passive trackers. All the ones in use draw power. I suppose you could plae a 12 car battery on the trailer to operate the lights, with a trailer plug to keept it charged and another plug to run the brakes etc, as I think these trailers need power brakes.

With a battery, as well as a hidden battery next to the lojack or equivalent, it would operate for a while. A unit that had a 5% duty cycle of on power would last longer.

A friend of mine leases high end cars and he install three trackers in each,

GPS are used to track wild life and those batteries although small last for several months.

Sure looks like an open market exist if one could apply 'GPS' to Tools, Trailers, and Construction equipment. Jim

In addition to a tracking system there are relatively inexpensive game trail cameras, easily concealed, that can record the deed and provide evidence which although may not be admissible in a court of law, may aide in establishing a "one-on-one" relationship with the perpetrator and an aluminum baseball bat, if the situation presents itself.
