Insulated Earthing Cable or Bare Copper Earthing Cable ?

10/25/2010 11:10 PM

Hi All, i have a problem with earthing cable from electrical equipment (such as transformer, motor enclosure) connect to earth bar, to connect to earth bar the earthing cable must go from underground to above ground (earth bar is above ground, and main earthing grid is underground). in such this case, the earthing cable must be insulated type to make sure the operator can not touch the earthing conductor, is that right ??? or do any body know the code or standard which they specify this item.

Dear Sir,

The earthing conductor will have Zero Voltage if the earth connection is good. In that case there will be no shock if any one comes into contact.

Dear friend,

Every country has their own electricity act or they follow a specific code of practice. All qualified and practicing engineers are supposed to possess a competent certificate or licence to carry out electrical jobs. The competent electrician/electrical engineer should know all the rules and act for executing the electrical job. Any violation of these rules may result in electrical accidents and the person responsible for the violation is punishable under the low of the country. So please find the code of practice of your country. Please refer IEEE or BS standards. If you are from India please refer and follow Indian Electricity Act .

The well designed earthing system as per the the above codes ensure almost zero potential at the body of the equipment. The important consideration is potential gradient and fault current discharge and to maintain total safety by the correct design . Weather the connecting lead is insulated or bare is no consideration.IEEE-80 clause 11 give an indirect answer to your question. A bare conductor for earthing is sufficient as per the engineering practice. But when earthing is done through a pipe insulations are used to avoid corrosion. As per the current engineering practice the internal wiring of buildings and for machinery wiring, earthing wire used is insulated due to safety reasons and to avoid fire risk.

Try British Standard 7671, then.

Insulated earthing cable but bare earthing rod,its normal earthing system but you can follow some standard like NFPA,NOC,IEEE,IEC etc
