LVL

10/26/2010 11:58 PM

We want to custom build an lvl 39 feet 8 inches long to use as a forward beam for a mezzanine inside of a large shed on my brother in laws property. I was hoping to make it clear span but, have been unable to locate any information over 32'. We are setting 6X6 posts attached to the exterior structure to set it on at either end. Now all I need to know is how many layers and how deep to make it.. I know that there are some great engineers out there with the answer. Looking forward to hearing from you...

LVL?

How much weight must it support? Is the load spread uniformly along this beam, or is it concentrated in various places?

It is strictly for storage.. max of 50 pounds per square foot.. I have made these before using drawings on a cocktail napkin from an engineer but, that was in a different lifetime and do not have that option anymore. This is also at my bro in laws workshop... so if I see an issue developing we are just going to post it which we prefer not to do in the beginning.. thanks for the input..

My older bro worked for Weyerhaeuser for 40 years. Laminated vernier lumber is cool, but I can't answer your question.

Do you plan to laminate this beam yourself? I'd be sure I had the PROPER equipment and knowledge of the process before undertaking this project.

I personally would not do it myself. Too much liability.

Laminated Veneer Lumber

Tornado is spot on, both dead and live loads their distributions are needed to size such a beam. For example, will the beam be supporting joists for the mezzanine floor? And what will the floor be supporting?

Contact a structural engineer would be my recommendation.

Georgia-Pacific makes these in standard depths to 18" and lengths to 48'; and special order depths to 24" and lengths to 60'. I haven't done any calcs, but I'm pretty sure this size range can do what you want.
