Gas Turbine Maintenance Schedule

10/28/2010 4:10 AM

We are having two nos combined cycle 34.5 MW Ge make frame 6 gas turbine with naphtha as fuel.(CV 10550 KCAL/KG),we are following maintenance schedule as per eoh of the machines and as per GE maintenance guide lines.

we are in the process of modifying it with dual fuel ,naphtha and RFG (CV 11975 KCAL/KG).

What will be the effect on the hot path gas components as well as other components of Gas Turbine. Will there be any change of maintenance schedule due to this conversion.

First, ask GE.

Second, what does the Mfr. of the dual fuel mod kit have to say?

The first thing that comes to mind is the quality of the gas. Depending on the source of the fuel gas, it may have a high sulfur content. This leads to numerous issues (a few of which are outside the turbine, you'd be dealing with higher SOX emissions, the formation and condensation of sulfuric acid in the HRSG (which means you'll be dealing with a higher rate of tube leakage), and depending on the types of emissions controls, the formation of ammonia/sulfur salt scale clogging up the tube surfaces.

My suggestion is to have a sample of the proposed gas analyzed and consult GE as to its quality and acceptability.

Gas Turbine Maintenance Schedules are a strong function of only the Wobbe Index for any fuel used and corrosive fuel components like Sulfur and its compounds, heavy metals like vanadium, alkali metals like sodium, pottasium in the new fuel.

You must contact the OEM i.e. GE who will advise you correctly and which will be based on solely the above parameters.

ON SUCH AN EXPENCIVE MACHINE! I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT YOU DO YOUR HOMEWORK PRIOR TO THIS QUEST. MY HUMBLE ADVISE TO YOU, 1/ CONTACT MANUFACTURER FOR SPEC, 2/ INVESTIGATE NEW FUEL BURNING QUALITIES & AFTER BURN, 3/ COMBUSTION TEMP, 4/ METAL EXPANSION (new fluid) 5/ CARBON DEPOSITES, IT GOES ON & ON
