Magnetic Liquid

10/28/2010 10:21 AM

I recently saw a TV commercial touting a new suspension system, Lexus ithink it was, that used a type of magnetic liquid to regulate the ride. Has anyone else seen this and what do you think that stuff is?

It is magnetorheological fluid.

Its use in suspension systems is only somewhat new. You can read about such fluids in general in the article linked above, and can scan down to Automotive and Aerospace to read about applications there, such as shock absorbers and engine mounts.

Ferrari use the system on their road cars, try there. hope this helps

It's Acura. Love Acura. Not so much the ZDX they are promoting. here is a link to the commercial: http://www.streetfire.net/video/acura-zdx-oil-commercial_749300.htm Here is another thread where its talked about a bit: http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=418377

It's Ferrofluid and older news

With the amount of current applied to it the viscosity gets higher or lower.

So apply that instead of the oil in your suspension and there you are.

If you want we make an application instead of Viagra

How would someone from: "a Quantum Dimension where time and global position are irrilevant," know "It's Ferrofluid and older news"?

I'm working on a design for a torque coupler/multiplier and might look into this.

I worked on active motor mounts years ago when ferrofluid was just coming on the commercial market. Had fun.

It's older news your even in your linear / analog world

I try to keep my mind as slow as your binary thoughts, mine are in nibbles and quads, you humans, think in black and white , my thoughts** are in color.

The idea to use it in a torque coupler or torque transmission is cool

Tip for your project ? not only change the voltage and/or current, use a higher frequency, which you should be able to variate when testing. (1 Khz ↔ 50 Mhz. )

Ferrofluid (nano) ≠ Magnetorheological (micro). The latter is used in suspension systems.

Cadillac, Corvette and others have used this technology for years on their respective suspension systems. Basically metal filings in a viscous fluid (oil) which by design passes thru an orifice. By regulating the magnetic forces, you can control the "viscosity" of the fluid as it passes thru the orifice, from just the fluid viscosity to a solid.

It should be said GM was the first to use this technology!

Re: Magnetic Liquid

I had been playing with the stuff in '96 in a kit that was sent me that included two nose to nose syringes with a short tube (orifice) between them and a cheap magnet. Just enough to make me think "now what the hell can I do with this"? At that time it was being further tested/developed in the front suspension of mountain bikes and was presented to engineers in trade magazines. These are the guys that first developed it. I even came up with a way for the Department of Defense to use it but my ex-company was too cheap-ass to fund its development and wanted the DOD to fund it instead without telling them the, probably patentable, idea behind the system. I even did drawings worthy of applying for a patent when I presented it to management. The DOD refused to fund a pig-in-the-poke and the project died in my drawer. When I left ten years ago, I destroyed all paperwork. The ideas are fresh in my brain. Only needs a good electronics/computer guy to work out the algorithms. Is anybodies military/industrial complex interested?

This is more than 20 years technology which is now migrated to auto industries. This suspension is developed by Lord Corporation and they hold patent on the magnetic suspension. This is used to damp noise, vibration and make ride smooth

This is Nano magnetic particles suspended in liquid and you can read details in
