Rating for Hot Oil Service

10/29/2010 3:13 AM

I have hot oil service wherein design conditions are 10 bar & 300Cent. This falls in 150# as per ASME B16.5. For hot oil, is it necessary to use 300# rating although the design conditions allow for 150#? (Is there some truth in this as I heard it somewhere) If yes, why?

Usually we use minimum 300# rating flanges to avoid leaks

Yes, many a times we use one step higher rating when more reliability agaist failure is needed, perticularly when the concequencial loss due to failure is high. In your case also it applies because any failure will result in not only loss of costly oil but pose a safety threat due to high temparature capable to cause severe burns to the people around .
