Pro/E Family Tables

10/30/2010 10:38 PM

I have a really simple question for most pro/e users. I have a certain part and its associated drawing. I want to add a new instance to this particular part and create a drawing for it. The only thing that is changing from the generic is some notes and of course the name of the drawing. Physically and dimensionaly everything else is the same. So I do not want to have to re-create a new drawing for this instance I just want to be able to create an identical drawing from the generic and change the notes and re-name it. What is the best way to do this?

I don't know if Pro/E works like AutoCAD, but in the latter you can do a "Save As" with a new filename and make the desired changes. This leaves the former file as it was.

you can't really do that in ProE, because you have to re-name the model also when using the save-as function.

use the "back-up" function to back up the drawing to a different directory, the models will be also be backed-up to that directory.

close and erase everything out of memory

change the working directory to the directory you backed-up to

open the .drw only (you can open up the models but you don't have to)

use the rename function to rename the .drw ONLY, do NOT change the name of the models, (.prt or .asm)

after renaming the .drw, use the "back-up function to back up the .drw to the original directory,

close and erase everything out of memory,

set working directory to the original location

you will now have 2 idential .drw's with 2 different file names , all of the original .prt and .asm models will be linked to each of these .drw's

notes, etc , can be changed in either .drw without affecting the other else...

good luck

You can add a parameter called part_number to your part. Create a family table and give the new instance a new part number. Add a column to your family table and pick parameter instead of feature or dimension. Now you can enter the new part number in that column. You won't have to add any other columns if the part is not changing. I am of course, assuming that you are familiar with creating family tables. If you need more information I will gladly help you out.
