Motor Y Phase Current High

10/31/2010 7:11 PM

Having two motors in conveyor 110KW. At the time of start both motor starts in parall. In one motor no load Amps is 89 and another motor noload Amps is 97.

Conveyor at load time Motor#1 draws R-146, Y-144 & B-143

& Motor#2 draws R-146, Y-170A & B-146

In Y phase found more current drawn by motor compare to others and noload time also Amp is different why this happen..?

Can have many reasons:

1. Condition of the drive, motor itself, mechanical resistance of the conveyor- length and type of belt, condition of bed or rolls. Also the return rolls.

2. Length of power line, section of wires to the motor.

3. Different type of motor.

Sorry, I didn't read the question well enough. Thought you just had differences between the 2 motors. Check the next posts.

Have IR and CR tests been made to both motors and supply cables?

How do the results compare?

These basic checks should have been done as soon as you realised you had a problem.

One other possible reason is that the Yphase winding has developed some shorted turns, thereby reducing the impedance. In such a case, the motor may show some distress while running, by way of uneven speed and noise.

As your data suggest that one out of two motors look OK. Means no external factor is responsible for this.

So I ll go with kvsridhars's thought of inter-turn shorting of winding.Winding connected between Neutral and yellow wire might be shorted by few turns, these shorted turns (even if one or two turns) work like a secondary coil of transformer and causes significant rise in the input current of coil. please note that reducing two turns from winding is not equal of electrical shorting of two turns of winding.

Some time this kind of shorting can not be detected with a multimeter or a micro ohmmeter as shorting only takes place at a higher level of voltages. surge tester is the only answer for that, though some people don't advised it.

Arun Babu

Have you done any of the tests I suggested?

If you have what are the results, it will give an indication of where to look next.
