Adding Another Fire Panel in Same Building

11/01/2010 10:05 PM

There is fire alarm system already in the building with 28 zones total, 27 used and 1 free. There is space for one more 4-zone module but it looks like it is not possible to get that module any more. Customer is now required to get sprinkler system installed and 6 more zones are needed. The only way other then replacing whole system is to install another fire alarm control with 6 or more zones, tie alarm output of that system to zone on existing system. I see no reason why this would not comply to fire code.

I could monitor both systems separately with cell back up for both and both systems would be located next to each other.

Would anybody know if this configuration could pass fire code in Canada. I know that I should contact local authorities and I am planning to do that but if somebody knows that it will not pass then I would not waste too much time

Thank you very much

You have to contact insurance to get approval on what you want to do. Often their requirements are higher than code.

That would be perfectly acceptable in the USA. Unfortunately, local Fire Officials many times have their own requirements that go beyond code. You would definitely want to check with your local Official. Also, since you are going to tie the new panel into the existing panel, I would not monitor both panels unless you are being required to report by zone to the Central Station. This will save the expense of added equipment, and save the owner on monthly costs.
