Why is all the trouble gone to to cast the squirrel cage conductors into laminated metal for induction motor cores? Why not just use tight fitting copper strips pushed into the laminated steel core? Thankyou for reading.
Simple, reliability, older motor had the squirrel cage made out of copper bars brazed to copper end shorting rings. The brazing failed, the result was an open circuit rotor winding.
To hear a motor with a failed rotor winding trying to start is like listening to pigs rutting, it's horrible! Sorry but that's how it was described to me as an apprentice, it wasn't until I came across one in "real life" did I realise how true the statement was.

GA to you Tony. i have seen a brazed end-ring fail and create all sorts of problems on a 6600V motor. This sounded more like amorous blue whales i guess.....
