Problem with 2006 Ford Escape

11/03/2010 1:45 PM

I have a 2006 ford escape, and recently it has a time cranking up. It'll turn over for about 4 to 5 secs. before cranking up, and at times the gauges will jump when u turn the ignition switch. im sure the solution is easy but im not much of a mechanic on cars. ive replaced the battery cables and cleaned the terminals, wondering the next step? tune-up or compression problem?

Connect a fuel pressure gauge and watch it when cranking. Next step is to watch the fuel pressure to see if it drops off. Have you changed your fuel filter yet?

Have the battery checked. Most of the chains will do this for free, and even install the new battery for you. Does it crank at the same speed it did as new, or does it seem slower? More detail on the "cranking" would help.

Caveat: When I had my last battery replaced by a chain, they lost the hold-down bolt that secures the battery. It's still somewhere inside the frame.

Yes, bobc, (and the rest of you mechanics out there) I did replace the missing bolt.

"...my last battery replaced by a chain..."

How does that work? I would be curious: Bicycle chain, tire chain, log chain...
