Convert 3 Level (RJ45 Ethernet) to 2 Level OOK Signals for Laser OOK Modulation

11/04/2010 12:05 PM

I need help with a mini communication project. I am trying to receive signals from RJ45 Ethernet (10 BASE-T), which comes in three logic levels (-2.5, 0, +2.5) and convert it into two logic levels so I can drive a laser on and off. Would any one know of any IC's that can accept these signals to output 2 logic levels or vice versa (two levels --> three levels)?? Is there a specific part designed to do this? Note: Someone said laser driving systems typically have some type of encoder/decoder that does this?

I believe it depends on what you specifically wanted to do! Logic level shifter circuit is generally what you will need to accomplish your task. They are readily available in TTL or CMOS. Google and search of logic level shifters.

You're going to switch a laser with ethernet?

It's one thing to use an ethernet protocol to switch any device on with a packet that says "ON" or off with packet that means "OFF" but when you're talking about signal conversion, it sounds like you're attempting to switch or PWM bit by bit by bit in the ethernet packet.

Given that ethernet has a standard 802.3 packet format, how are you going to deal all the bits in the header data, before the 'data' bits show up?

How are you going to handle the data exchange (confirmation) that ethernet expects?
