Solar Panel Interference

11/06/2010 9:25 AM

My car has been suffering by the central locking and immobilizing system being activated. It has been to the garage twice and nothing has been found to be causing the problem. A house in the vacinity has had solar panels installed on the entire roof which coincides with the time my car has been playing up. I also find out that my neighbour has been having the same problems with their car. Could the solar panels be the cause?

My crystal ball tells me that your Toyota Harrier has been possessed by the spirit of Idi Amin Dada. Every morning the clicking and the clacking of the motors that move your neighbor's solar panel have been disturbing the president for life from his long needed slumber.

Now onto a more realistic possibility that I will guess from the tiny amount of information you've provided.

I cannot completely rule out the solar panels, but I highly doubt they are the source of your problem. I suspect first that the design of your remote lock controller is easy to trigger while residing in your pocket. Next I suspect that there is somebody in your area that happens to have another remote that uses the same frequency and similar encryption pattern so that while they are just trying to use their remote to change their music (or whatever) the alarm in your vehicle also gets tripped. Hopefully you don't actually have somebody sniffing and hacking the RF spectrum in your area looking for things to break into. After eliminating all of these possibilities would I even consider the solar panel array.

You might consider consulting with a different car shop or the dealership about your problem. I would also explore the possibility with the dealership of changing the pseudo-random code seed word (electronic key) for the remote system.
