Looking Forward for a Comprehensive Automotive Security System

11/06/2010 10:03 AM

Hello!!

I am with an organization with deals in courier/logistic business, having fleet of 200+ vehicles. Intend to install an intergrated security system which must cover the following features:-

1. Should have been supported with hardware as well as software.

2. Must be supportive data wise and visually.

3. Can be installed at the checkin/checkout enterences/exits to record vehicle odometer reading, check in time and check out time, with visual evidence of the condition of vehicle and driver as well.

4. It would be an additional plus point if the system can also gauge the fuel tank real time quantity/literage when it got checked in or checked out.

Thanks and best regards,

SARWAR

You should post this question in the Communication section, perhaps there'll be someone there who is looking for a little project.

But before we go any further there are some fundamentals to be settled.

Are all of the 200 vehicles the same make and model?

Are the vehicles sufficiently sophisticated such that the relevant odometer/fuel usage information is available electronically/digitally?

Have you considered GPS tracking?

Have you considered Radio Data Despatch?

What radio system if any do you have now?

What radio systems are available to you?

Is it security of the vehicles, or payload that you are concened for?

Are you interested in knowing where the vehicle goes, to track it for unauthourised journeys?

Are your drivers company employees/unionised/contractors?

Does your company own the vehicles?

There are many turnkey logistics systems available to you however when you want more "bespoke" features then the costs go up. Factor in the the vehicles you are using now will not be the vehicles you are using in 4 years time increases the cost and obsolecense of the system.

Most courier/freight systems have radio data despatch and GPS tracking which is more than adequate for realtime tracking of the vehicles/freight. The Booking and Despatch software aided by the interactivity of the drivers responses will give you all the necessary logistics management reporting.

Great

I'm glad to hear that you are looking for a security system on a public engineering web site. It is good to hear that good engineering work is still appreciated some where.

What I don't understand is what you think we can do to help you? Do you want us to discuss the merits and drawback of GPS tracking of your fleet of vehicles? We could even discuss the techniques of radio tag vehicle locking systems. Either of these concepts we could discuss for you. If you wish a price quote for your fleet you've come to the wrong place, we don't do that here. This is not a sales department for any product line.

But here's some advice for you for finding a company that might not rob you blind. First you will have to provide much more information like the type of vehicles and your location(s). Second you will certainly have to know the security scenario you wish to consider. A bicycle messenger service in Manhattan, a transcontinental trucking firm, and any military vehicle security system will require vastly different security concerns.

Oh and lastly discussing any security system on a public blog is just plain dumb.

Who, me?

Well it all depends on which field you're talking about. Speaking of fields, I could certainly do with some professional help to get these leaves out of my back yard. Speaking of yards, if we ever do go metric will my back yard get 10% larger or smaller? One professional that helps me with small problems is my dentist. He fills those small little holes in my head all the time. You really shouldn't have too many holes in your head. If you do your head might shrink. I don't need professional help to shrink my head. If my head shrinks any more I won't be able to mix many philosophies from different eras into obtuse rambling rhetoric and then where will I be? Now I ask you, why can't different philosophies just happily coexist. I mean the stage director, actor and audience all have different philosophies regarding the play. But with out any of them there is no play.

So why do you think I might need professional help. My penguins are peaceful.
