Clean Technology

11/08/2010 6:33 PM

Hi Everyone .. I'm a senior year student .. Me and my project team are trying to some Ideas to pick one for our graduation project. Clean Technology and Green Technology are our fields of interest .. We came up with some ideas but we're not so keen about any .. We would be so grateful if anyone gave us some suggestions ..

What ideas exactly have you got so far? "Clean Technology" and "Green Technology" are great buzz words but they could mean just about anything in any engineering field?

Please provide more information.

Yea,thank you,I appreciate your Interaction. We are so Interested in Clean Technology field, and I know that is so wide and can't be determined by two words. We are a group of Mechanical Engineering Students, and so far we've got the Idea of "Solar Refrigeration",and to come up with something something new and with low cost, we have some Ideas, but we welcome any suggestion about this field. beside,we live in a dry sunny region, which is a great advantage for our idea. I hope I gave you the Information you need, and am looking forward to replying me,,and I'll be so thankful if you helped me in this field,I hope we keep in contact. who knows it might be a product sometime and thank you again for your Interest and Advice.

Have you performed a search of CR4 for "solar refrigeration" as I believe there have been a few discussions previously on CR4 that may be of interest to you.

Additionally a good internet search will give you plenty of ideas and is a great way to assist general learning.

Solar refrigeration should be an excellent choice, probably based on an ammonia/water absorption cycle. For theory, there is plenty of on-line and textbook material. If you want to get your hands on it right away, obtain a recreational vehicle refrigerator, preferably of the combination type that can run on electricity and propane. Then experiment with focusing-type solar collectors. Put temperature sensors on the "generator" portion to compare electric/propane/solar performance.

If you proceed with this, we would enjoy periodic reports. (Maybe start a blog.)

If you are interested in Electric Cars, I can suggest working with my company on designing a charging station system. We are working on some pilot projects to integrate DC Fast charger with Level 2 stations, a Solar module and energy storage. Send me a message if you would like to know more.

Oh! Free engineering! You seem to need some engineering to learn the feasibility of what you are talking about.

You would need a massive array and the same with storage. You are on a dead end road I believe.

The one workable option is to install a system with minimum panels and storage but have it grid connected - 99% of the power from the grid. Most of the public and especially the greens will fall for it with no problem.

We do have a team working on this. And a dead end is very much possible, hence it's called a Pilot project. The goal is to level out peak demand, and yes it would be connected to the grid. In any event the agreement is signed and the project is a go ahead. We'll see what comes out

I guess I am just accustomed to having the financial package worked out before a project starts - even a pilot project.

1) How many cars to charge per day?

2) How many kW per car?

Use PV Watts (from NREL) to learn what solar capture can be expected at your location.

How much premium can you practically plan to place on the convenience of providing the charging station?

When someone can charge at home at night I doubt they will be interested in paying much extra. If the car will not get you to work and back on a charge not many are going to be interested in buying such a car.

One possible location might be in the multi-level parking garages where a car could be charged while a person is at work. Your effective working day would probably be between 6 and 8 hours.

The solar side is eye candy.

The cars are Nissan Leaf -24kw battery, to charge 3-4 times a day. 10 kw solar carport with 40 kwh energy storage. What i need is to get the cost of charger installation down: prefab carports, maybe transformer boxes from China, any other ideas?

It would also be good to try several different batteries: the most cost effective is lead acid, we are also looking into lithium ion.

I'm not familiar with a "24kw battery" [??]

This might merit a separate thread, rather than riding on the coattails of the OP's project.

Sorry I meant 24 kwh for the Leaf. Agree, this doesn't belong on this thread

IDEA ONE:

Design a super insulated food freezer that is powered by one or two PV panels. As long as the sun shines, the compressor should run, bringing the temperature lower and lower and lower. When the sun quits, the unit shuts off, and starts warming up very slowly due to the thick insulation, but never gets above freezing. Could also try something like this with a refrigerator, but that would be more difficult since you don't want to freeze the food.

IDEA TWO:

Super insulated house with the south wall as close to 100% glass as practical. Start small, maybe get habitat for humanity to help build it. Here's the outline:

12" thick concrete slab floor, insulated with insulation all around the exterior. South wall 12' high mostly glass, with 2' tall operable windows near the top of the wall for ventilation, North wall 8' high with two 24"x24" windows so you can put box fans in for summer ventilation. Roof R-50, Walls R-30-40, have moveable insulated panels you can stick in the windows at night to hold in the heat, and to keep it out in the summer. Might install sliding glass door on east and west walls for morning and afternoon solar gain. Make this a two room house. The living areas and the bathroom. House dimensions 15' wide North/South and 40' wide East/West so long side is on the south. This is 600 sq. ft. house. For 1200 sq. ft house make it 80 ft long. Keep it simple so it is cheap to build, cheap to operate, cheap to maintain. Start selling them like hotcakes to the 100EE6 baby boomers that will want one as they retire during Great Depression 2. ;)

your first idea intrigued me, would u mind explain how it works? what it is called? a picture or two would be very helpful.

In my country, if its not raining, the sun is damn hot. and nobody is harvesting either.

would be great to know how it works, coz like the whole country has a fetish to air conditioning. not because the ambient air is too warm. it's just that design of the buildings are like ovens when the airconds are not operating, not forgetting drinking iced-everything for each and every cup they can get their hands on.
