Cooling Pedestal for High Temperature Pump

11/08/2010 11:09 PM

Dear Engineer...

Is it necessary to install cooling water pedestal in high temperature pump (above 300degC)?

The water will have to be maintained at high pressure or else it will turn to steam.

What is the application?

Depends on how much misalignment your pump coupling can handle as well as a few other issues. Each mounting situation is different. If you don't understand what's going on in your application then best follow the lead of someone who does. If you are equipped to accurately measure the temperatures and thermal expansion of the structures involved you will be in a good position to determine best practice. It may indeed require a cooling pedastal or other means for you to control these thermal conditions so that pump components remain in good mechanical alignment and avoid the vibration, bearing wear problems, pump internal clearance issue and pipe stresses caused by uncontrolled misalignments.

First I Would Like appreciate for your responds, is very valuable for me. Actually in my refinery, I have pump (high temp service) which cooling water piping conform to API 610 Plan G (cooling pedestal, stuffing box jacket and bearing housing) in series, when I cross check to latest API std 610 10th edition, API doesn't regulated Cooling water Piping Plan G anymore, so I am still confused whether Pedestal cooling was needed for high temp. service pump?
