Nevada facility generates current 4x the rest of Earth

Scientists at the Nevada Test Site produced a nearly 19 million amp current using the 650-ton Atlas pulsed-power generator. Although the test lasted only a few millionths of a second, the current produced was equal to roughly four times all the electrical power on Earth. I'd hate to get stuck with that energy bill...

I wonder what generating huge amounts of power has to do with testing ageing nuclear weapons? It sounds like they needed a pressure wave, but I'm not sure why.
