Air Cooled Heat Exchanger Design

11/19/2010 11:56 AM

I am presently working on an air cooled heat exchenger for a project in Nigeria.

I need to do a sizing for the Tubeseet thickness and the Header. I checked API 661, but could not actually get a solution. API 660 was not of great help since I presumed that I can get my way through it.

Can any one get me through on this.

Thank you.

This heat exchanger is for what application.?

Is it parallel flow or counter flow or cross flow type?

Generally two methods are used to design heat exchanger. One is LMTD ( Log Mean Temperature Difference ) method and another is Effectiveness Vs NTU ( Number of transfer Units) method.

Depending upon the fluids used different hear transfer coefficients to be used. Please refer any heat transfer handbook for more details.

In oil and gas process, we used to design the air coolers with a header boxes of noncircular "rectangular" type. And to proceed a mechanical design and stress analysis for that type of rectangular header boxes, we use ASME BPVC, Section VIII, Division 1, Mandatory Appendix 13 "Vessels of Noncircular Cross Section".

And for Noncircular Unstayed Flat Heads and Covers, see the same code, Para. UG-34, Equation 5.

Free download the attached animated file for Air Cooled Bank mechanism at a petrochemical plant by GEA (only 70 KB): Animation_-_Air_Cooler_Bank.

You can contact the Technical Dep. of Air Cooler Industry ACI Srl in Italy

www.acisrl.com

They are using the special technology called "SKYVE FIN" which is particularly suitable and efficient for a lot of air-coolers applications and also for High Pressure coolers.
