Car Projector Headlight Lens

03/21/2007 3:46 AM

In a car projector headlight manufacture (xenon or halogen), what material is used for the internal condenser lens, and why? I have seen references to glass or resin - what resin is currently used and why is it preferable to glass?

clear ABS. can be molded and does not break like glass, but you need to separate it from the halogen by a minimum spacing or it can melt. No problems with LEDS

I never understood why anyone in his right mind would live with projector type headlamps. The more gradual falloff in light output with respect to distance for conventional headlamps is more comforting from a standpoint of seeing what looms further distant on the roadway, for example, reflections from the retinas of deer and bear.

Comments would be appreciated.

My '03 Merc has the clear lenes, fluted reflector halogen lights. They work well for me as they are still the yellow, white(mostly white) similar to the star we were born under. I heartily dislike the blue/whites they do not show things on the road at all well and on low beam they hurt the eyes more so than brights on halogens.

Ford use plastic lenses for some headlights but the lenses gradually turn yellow & have to be replaced.

To clarify, my question was refering not to the outer light cover (or lens as it is still sometimes called despite no light-focussing function). This has been polycarbonate for quite some years.

I was actually refering to the internal dome lens, located just ahead of the light source in a projector headlight. Is this glass or resin? If resin, what type and why? Thanks for your advice.
