Pressure Testing at Max. Flange Rating (Piping)

11/23/2010 1:30 AM

I understand that it is possible to pressure test a piping system at its max. flange rating i.e. A106-B 150# @20 barg. Since pressure leak test is 1.5x Design pressure (B31.3), the test pressure will be 28.5 barg. With this presure, we are above the 150# rating without the need to go to the next class rating i.e. 300#. Where in B31.3 is this stated explicitly?

Pressure test is for the piping system, not for the flange. Please see what are the working pressure and design pressure of the piping system & then pressure leak test at 1.5x Design pressure as per ASME 31.3.

Rating and test pressure are two different things. Test pressure is always higher than the rating.

If still in doubt, why do'nt you go for pneumatic leak test at 1.1x Design pressure as per ASME 31.3.
