Trunnion at Saddle Region

11/23/2010 8:24 AM

hi to all engineer and designer and fabricator,

I am searching for an opinion about the possibility to place a bolted trunnion at the saddle to facilitate lifting the heavy horizontal vessel since logically it is the best choice the to place the trunnion.....

if anyone have an experience, your reply will be much appreciated...

A sketch or picture would help much.

Will the vessel need to be installed in the vertical or horizontal position ?

Usually, two or more trunions or lugs are used.

Usually they are welded, not bolted and remain on the vessel permanently.

How heavy is the vessel ?

hi, in my case of horizontal vessel weighing almost 350 ton and in diameter of 7m and 25m length...and I was thinking that it will be better to lift the equipment at the saddle since I have reinforcement in saddle region rather than risking deformation of the shell when lifting...

This is a significant major lift.

Errors could be very expensive an possibly deadly.

If you have never done this before and you are looking for advice from strangers on an internet forum, you are in big trouble.

Pay for a experienced structural professional

Not knowing the structure of your final housing/mounts. Many large tanks are placed by means of lifting slings placed near the saddles. These sling the impact of lifting and reduce the structural engineering cost of single point lift attachments. Many of the crane company's can assist you with your needs if you provide the proper information to them. Trunnion works but it sounds like you are not making a mobile item but a stationary one.
