This is of course only a personal opinion based on the conditions you listed, all wheel drive might get you going sooner than studded snows, but studded snows will stop you better than all wheel drive. Now, since the post didn't help you too much lets see what additional info someone can submit that might be more helpful!

Ideally you would have all wheel drive with studded winter tyres.

You cannot expect to drive in icy conditions as you would during warm summer.

All wheel drive will give you some small advantage over 2 wheel drive, however winter tyres will make the difference be it 2 or 4 wheel drive.

I am wondering if the person meant all season tires. I would take AWD any day over studs. vehicles that have AWD have traction control,anti locs,stability control air bags,and the o crap ejector button, the advantages keep going on. ever have a chain break and beat the crap out of the side of your car. studded tires went out with the hippies.

Studded tires are still preferred in areas where black ice conditions are prevalent
