Steel Reinforcement in RC Beam

03/21/2007 12:21 PM

I am a new civil engineer but very limited in some areas of this field. Hence, I will love to appear for your help with my professional problems.

How does one calculate the steel reinforcement (type, size, shape) of a Concrete beam, of the dimension (B=0.3m X H=0.5m) 6 meters long, which is simply supported on both ends.

Though I am not a civvy like you, I still think you need to specify the application before approaching designing................?

What type and amount of loads are acting on the beam?

Recommend you go back to university and study basics in structural elments of materials.

You have seen/felt the 3 responses--but I shall tolerate your lack of specifications.--and try to guide you.

What load do you expect to carry?

  • Distributed : Say "1 Ton per sq meter warehouse first floor 6x4 meter and continuously like that.every 4 meters"
  • OR Random live loads--people+ general funiture on a conctrete solid slab 5" thick
  • OR 2 of your specified beams 2.5 meter apart supporting a conrete reinforced deck-and to carry light passenger cars one way..
  • SAY what?

And again-why did you specify a Cross section 0.3x0.5m at all?Why not 0.5 wide by 0.3 m deep Or why not I section 0.2(0.1 rib)x 0.6 deep? Don't you actually calculate?

Do you know why a Steel H Beam (with flanges top and bottom i.e turned 90°)is a better/ rational shape?

Do you know that there is no need of steel on the top flange of RCC beams--and no concrete to cover the tensile steel members - which should be at the bottom?

Reply all these.

Everybody will THEN teach you if you are not sure of what/how you should apply >> what you learnt at your Engineering college.
