Cable Temperature

11/25/2010 3:17 AM

We normally talk about max. conductor temperatures of say 90degC for XLPE-insulated cable or 70degC for PVC-insulated cable.

At the max conductor temperature, what is the normal temperature of the cable outer jacket (for e.g. if the cable is buried underground with ambient of 30degC)? How hot can the outer jacket be (normally or at max operating temp)?

Yes, cable is live and running up to conductor max continuous op temperature. I'm just wondering what is the outer jacket temperature in such cases. How hot the external of the cable gets...

You are talking about a thermo dynamics problem. The Neher-McGrath method will do this for you. Check http://www.ceejpublishing.com/Articles/0031.htm for the description of this simple method. Hope you have a lot of spare time.

Did you know that cables get hot for a reason? If not you should think about why that is and change either:

1. cross section of cable

2. power supply

3. your job

Gentlemen
The temperature in the coverage of power cables (not exposed to the sun radiation) comes to approximately:
Thermoplastic insulation (70 ° C), sheath (65 ° C)
Thermoset insulation (90 ° C), sheath (85 ° C)
These values are approximate, depending on the type of insulation and sheath materials, thickness, metallic layers, the presence of heat sources, among others.
Hope this helps
