Reactor Sizing

11/27/2010 1:02 PM

Dear friends,

what are the parameters required for sizing a reactor?

our company have to hookup a new generator with our existing grid..

Generator rating

Rated POWER 12MW

voltage 6300volts

Rated current 1374.6A

rated frequency 50Hz

synchronous reactance Xd=1.8236 (per unit value)

Transient reactance Xd'=0.1814 (per unit value)

subtransient reactance Xd''=0.1115 (per unit value)

negative phase sequence reactance X2=0.1361 (per unit value)

Zero phase sequence reactance Xo=0.0537 (per unit value)

short circuit ratio 0.61

Now we have to hookup this generator with my existing grid(main busbar) design for 31.5kA short circuit current.. in existing setup, when a short circuit occurs 19kA current flow through this main bus...

i have also calculated some parameter for reactor sizing which are listed below

rated current of reactor=1500A

reactance = 0.1ohms

voltage drop = 137volts

X/R=1

but our consultant company also ask one more parameter which is rate of reactance of reactor. but i dont have any idea abt this parameter.

im a young engineer.. i need ur help... plz describe this parameter and other required parameters.

if u have any link or any thing else abt reactor sizing calculation plzzzzzzzz share with me....

regards

ur needy friend

What kind of reactors? What you mean with "Reactor". I know Nuclear Reactors.

This is not a simple answer & the other contributors are way off base. It would take too long to put enough information on this forum to answer your question clearly.

If you can get a copy of the old Westinghouse (now ABB) Transmission & Distribution Reference Handbook it has much information in there that will assist you.

Good Luck.

Just amplifying what KRW43 said, iirc, a common use of reactors is to reduce fault current in a power distribution system. (I seem to have a vague recollection of them also being used in some motor starters to reduce the motor inrush during starting.) (I wish I wasn't getting old ;-)
