Drawing Program Question

11/28/2010 8:26 PM

After asking you for advice, I chose the drafting program CadStd as a simple one for my infrequent use. Now I have a how-do-you-do-it question:

How do you draw a line of a specific length? I haven't been able to find this--but maybe it's not in the free version.

Thanks.

I've never used that one, but they're all pretty much the same. There should be a "draw line" command or button. You should either have an x,y starting coordinate and a x,y stopping coordinate, or you should be able to place a point at the beginning and then draw relative to that, something like 15, 60 or 15<60 etc where 15 is the length and 60 is the angle. Does it have a help button?

With any CAD software there is certainly a way to edit the line length after it's drawn.

You will need to select (probably Left click) the line after it's drawn and then right click for options in a drop box or input/edit in command line but you should be able to edit it as it is drawn too.

Check out the embedded help files or you tube for tutorials.

Most CAD software packages have a 0 to 360 degree field, with 0 and 360 degrees at the 3 o'clock position.......increase in angle is counterclockwise.

For instance, if you want to draw a horizontally level line 10 inches long:

- select the start of your line anywhere on the screen field by left clicking the mouse, followed with the Enter button, then...

- type in @10<0, followed by the Enter again.

You really need to try the software's "Tutorials" and read the manual as well as use the "help" functions.....or take a CAD course at your local Community College or enroll in an Adult Continuing Ed course.

You can also purchase inexpensive CAD tutorials on CD or DVD...check out Ebay or Amazon.com for these.

Or, find a friend locally that can show you the basic ropes of how to use the software.....usually they can show you shortcuts we all use day to day.

Good luck!

I am using the CAD software from autodesk. you can specify the length initally after you chose the command "line" when you draw the line.

Incase if you have already drew a line, then you can use "lengthen" command to modify the length.

Just my 10cents worth

why are you lot 'presuming' answers if you don't or never used the program in question. just refrain from answering and let those that use it answer or download it yourself and help the bugger out.

like others I don't know this programme but there are some tutorials here which might help. It looks pretty basic & the tutorials use the cursor offset by looking at the screen display to set lengths. I would have thought that you could manually input this info but you need to try the tutorials withe the CAD programme running to see how this works.

Thanks for the tutorial address. I haven't yet, but will probably download it so I will have it handy.

Just downloaded it:-

Start the line; hit tab to get you in the X start box; hit tab to get you in the Y start box; hit tab to get you in the Dist box: enter the line length; hit tab to get you in the Ang box: enter the angle; hit carriage return.

This seems to work, but I apparently also need to designate a start point even if it is a grid point. Besides the tab, the cursor can also be put in the boxes with the mouse, but the X and Y apparently have to be zeroed. I'll have to explore that a bit more.

Thanks.

In CADStd, to draw a line of a specific length, start by selecting the "Line Drawing Tool":

Note the location of the cursor near the top of the tool box under "Draw Options" at the right of the image. Select this. When you move the cursor over the drawing area, it changes to a large cross. You can either click on your starting point, or you can specify your starting point in the parameters line at the bottom left of the screen:

Again, note the position of the mouse cursor. In this area, you can also specify the absolute length of the line and the angle at which is is to be drawn, or you can specify the end point by checking the "Absolute Coordinates" box.

you can specify your starting point in the parameters line at the bottom left of the screen:

Thanks for the instructions. The above didn't work for me yet, so will have to explore some more. I'll also have to try the "Absolute Coordinates" box to learn how it works.

"Absolute" takes its coordinates from the origin of the cartesian co-ordinate system (x0y0z0)

Optionally you should be able to specify "Incremental", meaning the second point of the line would be specified relative to the first point, rather than the x0y0z0 origin.

Not knowing this from the git-go indicates to me that you need to take a course or run through all the available tutorials.

Though not familiar with CadStd, I would be surprised if it didn't have THIS particular similarity to autodesk's offerings:

Before you begin a drawing, set up the various Parameters to which you want your dimensions (Units) to adhere, as depicted here (screen-shots combined)

Then, and only then can you specify a length (with "digital precision") exactly as you desire...

Blessings to all ~
