Glue to Attach FRP to PVC

12/03/2010 7:30 PM

I want to make a box with FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) and I'd like to be able to glue it to some PVC. Any suggestions on what type of glue would work?

Let's see, you are making a wet layup of glass cloth and liquid resin? Yes?

The liquid will be either epoxy or polyester? Right? Have you done this before?

The PVC is what? Flexible? rigid? Pipe, per chance?

Why not just lay the glass aroung the PVC?

At this point, all I can say is don't use wood or paper glue.

No information, no meaningful advice.

Gluing FRP to PVC, I'd use an epoxy diluted with some acetone or MEK. But I don't have a clue what you want to do.

Hell, pop-rivets might work for all I know.

FRP is a sheet "plastic" product sold as wall panels. You find it in many public restrooms and also in restaurant kitchens. I want to attach pieces of the FRP cut in sizes to make a "tray" or open box. I wanted to be able to attach the FRP to PCV pipe, say 3/4 inch in dia. for additional support.

If you want to make FRP trays, why do you start from FRP sheets. That's lot of efforts and costly. Instead you could consider making from basic materials like FRP mats and resins. This would call for a mold and would be justified if only you need to make in bulk.

Long back, some 20 years back, for a similar requirement, we adopted a procedure as below:

The need was to reinforce the PVC tanks, pipes etc for holding hydrochloric acid and caustic solution, etc. Due to temperature the tanks and pipes lost the shapes. So FRP was preferred as reinforcing cover. Still the bondings were not proper.

Then, a thin coat of PVC solvent (cement), which is used for sticking PVC pipefittings, was applied to the PVC surface. These solvents set fast. Before set, another over-coat of resin was applied quickly and followed by FRP mats. This inter mixed layer of PVC solvent and FRP resin, I believe gave a good bonding. That was long back, now there would be more choice of materials, solvents etc. Some R&D might be required.

What is the size of the try you want to make? And what is the size material (FRP sheet) you have on hand? Where you want to have the PVC pipe for support? Let me try if I could help.

I know how I want to put it together - I'm just looking for suggestions on what type of glue would work. The size of the sheet I have is 4ft by 8ft, the PVC pipe is 8 ft lengths.

The box/tray will be 2ft by 4ft by 2-1/2 inches high. As I mentioned, I have the design just wondering about glues...I may just do some experiments since I'm not getting any suggestions here.

Although I have not used them personally the "Gorilla" glues have quite a following.

Next would be "Liquid Nails" type adhesives. Silicones would come up last in the flexible adhesive group. I wouldn't use epoxy or acrylics, too rigid.

Mechanically abrade and clean both surfaces prior to bonding.

Good luck.

There are many glues out there and if it is for general purpose any glue would work.

Some of the suppliers are: SealBoss, MPD Parts Catalogue Inboard & Outdrives, infinityfrp, Kohler FRP REPAIR KIT, TCC EPOXY FIBERGLASS REPAIR KIT.

I have handled similar products but not the same. TCC says that they supply mats as well besides resins/glues.

Glad that you have the design, Still my in put is: After marking the envelopment on the sheet, cut only the 4 Conner (2-1/2 X 2-1/2) squires. Don't cut the bottom of the tray bottom edges. But carve deep groves, say 2/3 of the thickness and fold the sides backward. Such that only 4 Conner lengths are to be sealed. Use FRP mat pieces and glue them at the joints with rich coat of resin. Bottom Conners an also be reinforced with mat strips.

These FRP mats and resins are irritating stuffs, for both skin and eyes. Have eye and hand protects and try them in good ventilated area. Good luck.

Thanks for all the input...I've decided to go a different route and will not be needing the glue.
