Compatible Simple AC Motor Instead of Wound Rooter Motor for Machine

Hello dears;

We have an old BOBST band die cut machine which has also an old fashioned variable speed wound rooter AC main motor. The motor has been creating problems for a long time and we want to replace it with a compatible simple AC motor with inverter. I have started this job and need suggestions from my friends. The name plate data is as under. The motor accelerates a fly wheel (500Kg) and after acceleration, an air operated clutch engages the fly wheel with machine.

dear friend,

before making a decision to replace the motor please calculate the required starting torque to operate the fly wheel and then only you can select the capacity of the motor and the vvf drive / inverter. you may also need a series reactor in inverter to increase the starting torque of the machine.

I think it's also important to know if the WR control is being used to actually vary the speed or is being used to provide a soft start.

VFDs tend to not like clutch driven applications. They have limited overload capabilities, usually 150% peak, and when a clutch engages, the step change in load can cause the VFD to current limit, or it may even damage the output transistors from excessive dI/dt. It's not to say it cannot be done, but you need to go into it with eyes wide open and explain to your VFD supplier up front exactly what you intend to do and that you want them to guarantee the application.
