What's all this phony security stuff anyway?

12/14/2010 12:10 AM

I am being plagued by programs like Barracuda, which declare me a spammer (I am NOT) and cause my emails to be rejected. This is the second one that did this to me.

My Internet provider (not me--my ISP) has been blocked by Microsoft-based email-programs, so I cannot send emails to any Hotmail accounts (the provider is baffled by this, and can't seem to resolve the problem--mainly because he can't seem to find anyone at Hotmail to talk to). They said, "We have been having an issue with all Microsoft related mail programs and the link to hotmail in this email doesn't give us any valid contact info to get this issue resolved. We are working on this every day to get a resolution. Our IP's don't show up on any SPAM list but Microsoft is blocking some of them anyway."

This all sounds like a big scam to me. The Barracuda people want me to pay $20 per year to be declared a safe sender. I'm betting they make a nice bit of money from the people who subscribe to Barracuda to "protect" them, and from people like me who cough up the $20 to get listed. The Hotmail business sounds like something Microsoft dreamed up to screw Hotmail.

Any thoughts?

As guest say's Hotmail is Microsoft and there would be little point in them blocking one of their own email programs.

The provider is saying they're baffled ... perhaps a quick check of they're status is in order.

I went to Woody's reference and found this:

"Just because the IP is listed with a particular blacklist does not mean that you are sending spam, just that particular blacklist suggests not to accept mail directly from that IP address. Most residential Cable/DSL IP addresses that are dynamically assigned will indicate that they are blacklisted, meaning you should be sending from your ISP's mail server, not a mail server running on your own internet connection."

Well, phooey! My IP address is dynamically assigned. Guess I am doomed.

You have a good memory. Yes, it was the 2GB problem. I don't think this is related.

Actually it's related to sticking with outlook & being your own mail server

& I understand you don't want to go through the learning curve to switch to something new

there are plenty of organizational tools available for Gmail or even hotmail

I know on gmail you can keep you old address & use their server

you might consider setting up an account & playing around with it, just to have a better idea of how much work it would be, you don't have to commit until you are completely satisfied it will meet your needs. Only then make your present addresses pass through the new account.

does that mean you need to use them as your ISP to have a mail account?

I dunno. All I know is that my emails get there when sent through Earthlink. Anything that gets bounced I re-send via Earthlink.

Actually most IP addresses are dynamically assigned on cable modem systems, but you link to the ISP and mail is through there server. Most ISPs provide a mail services themselves, try using that instead of hotmail. Hotmail is not a good way to send email, nor is gmail (though gmail seems to be used by foreign, outside Us, spam and scams you know the inheritence in england things and college online ads).

I would go down to the cable service and check to see if you need a new modem or if there is anything they can charge to get you on with the better e-mail connections.ds

emails sent from accounts under hotmail, gmail, etc. are high risk. These are where most of the scams and low end spam mail get sent out from. Maybe it would be better to get a more secure isp. I personally delete all emails from such accounts unless i specifically know the email account id.

Re: What's all this phony security stuff anyway?

you forgot the worst, yahoo

I did an informal survey of my spam folder

out of 30

21 unique domains

1 gmail

3 hotmail

5 yahoo

in my mail box far & away most spammers take the time to set up a website & mail accounts

one of my friends had her domain hijacked, when the hosting company was purchased by a spammer

There is something to be said for the economy of scale

I used different ISP's [comcast, sti] mail services for a few years & found them to be less user friendly, than the more universal web based mail servers

I guess you already went into your e-mail account and erased any multiple e-mails in the sent folder. Or could you have barracuda hiding in your add-ons?

or in the start- programs area ,did you check to see if barracuda is a recently added program that you can delete.ds

Umm, he is talking about barracuda and other security software on the receivers end of the email he sends out through his mail host, hotmail account. In otherwords, he sends you an email and your security software blocks/isolates it as high risk because of the address the mail came from (or because the you had blocked those extensions).
