Liquid CO2

12/14/2010 3:49 PM

This morning while driving I saw a tractor trailer pulling a chemical tank (5-6k gallon size). The side of the truck said Refrigerated liquid CO2. This struck me as odd because I was under the impression that CO2 sublimed and did not have much of a liquid state?

Any thoughts?

That is at atmospheric pressure. There is a pressure at which you will start seeing a liquid phase develop. The shape of a phase diagram also depends on temperature.

See here:

Notice that, at one bar pressure, you have an interface between solid and gas. This is where sublimation occurs (-78.5ºC). At 5.11 bar you will start seeing translation from a solid to a liquid and then a gas at the temperature is raised.

Sorry, every place I said "bar", it should be "Atm."

That is what makes this site so rewarding... to answer a question based on your own experience, merely to help someone's understanding.

kramarat's first link is a great demonstration of my minimally technical answer, although I had no idea that a polyethylene pipette bulb could withstand a 5-atm internal pressure - even for the time it took to do that excellent demonstration. That's why I gave him a GA.

On my quick little search, I also found out that one of the big uses of liquid co2 is as a propellant in paint ball guns and co2 powered bb guns. I learn something new every day. I knew about those co2 canisters, but I figured it was compressed gas, not liquid.

What a shame that wasn't posted on the "Oil spill" thread - might have saved a great deal of chatter.

Nice find GA
