12/16/2010 11:04 PM

What I want to do is test an oscillator of an RTC. How do I connect it to an oscilloscope.. do I need a timer? I have a DS1307 in had.. For now, I want to know the schematic to connect it to a scope.. Regards, M.T

I found a data sheet for the DS1307 pretty straight forward if you want to check the oscillatior just probe the crystal with your Oscilloscope.

Link for data sheet here;

It has a typical operating circuit on page 2.

I tried checking the two out puts on the scope but all I got was the high voltage .. I think there is another way to hook it up

Here is the circuit that is being used. I can't seem to get an output from the right pin. Why do you think so?.

I suggest you have a little read of the data sheet. Arduous I know most data sheets hide the information you wantin lots of stuff that don't matter (too much).

 Programmable squarewave output signal

The RTC needs to be instructed to send the clock signal to the output port.

SQW/OUT (Square Wave/Output Driver) – When enabled, the SQWE bit set to 1, the SQW/OUT pin outputs one of four square wave frequencies (1Hz, 4kHz, 8kHz, 32kHz). The SQW/OUT pin is open drain and requires an external pull-up resistor. SQW/OUT will operate with either Vcc or Vbat applied.

Some more salient information;

Please note that the initial power-on state of all registers is not defined. Therefore, it is important to enable the oscillator (CH bit = 0) during initial configuration.

What that means is that you need to initialise and communicate with the RTC to make it work.
