Low Speed Small Gasoline Engine

12/18/2010 8:22 AM

I need to assemble a handheld concrete power trowel for finishing vertical surfaces. For this a small (1 hp) 300 rpm motor is necessary. Does anyone have information on this?

If you are building this from scratch look at the design of a random orbital sander.

Although, you may want to look at air power, something like this would be much easier on the arms than carrying around a motor all day long.

It may need some modification for use with concrete.

" trowel for finishing vertical surfaces"

Please send pictures of the pour that requires such a trowel. I'm anxious to see how you hold the concrete in place until it's time to finish it.

It will be very low slump shotcrete.

Thanks. I can't help you, except to say that I'd try to find some type of shaft driven finisher so that the motor would sit on the ground.

But I certainly don't envy you either. Finishing floors must be hard enough. Can't imagine pushing a finisher into a wall to smooth out stiff concrete.

Happy Holidays.

Try searching Globalspec for "Gas powered drills" these tools have the horse power and gear reduction you might need.

Thanks. Globalspec search didn't come up with any but there are several that I found from a couple of vendors and they are reasonably priced and have speed control that will work well.

Hello dbash,

Just a suggestion! You may get what you pay for, but if this gasoline engine is 2 cycle, you may find yourself having a difficult time getting it started and keeping it running long enough get anything accomplished. Good luck, nothing all that good ever comes easy!

I have one of these. It's the power head for a RedMax one man post hole digger that handles augers up to 4" dia. It's a two stroke with a gear box that drives it around 100 rpm under load. Output shaft is 3/4 dia with a 1/4" dia cross hole for a removable hitch pin. I made an attachment for it with a 1/2" Jacobs chuck for hole drilling. Works very nice.

Mine is an earlier model than the link shows. About 5 yrs old. I never have problems with it stopping at idle without pushing the kill button.

No scratch and skim, one shot and finish.

There was a demonstration at World of Concrete that can be seen at American Shotcrete Assoc. under video demos (finishing).

I own a RYOBI tiller, (commercial grade) 1 HP motor (part of a kit that includes tree trimmer, weed eater, etc.)... The motor is very easy to start, runs well... (the tiller) turns about 1 rev. per second. but (of course) in a horizontal orientation. Transmission seems very robust (I know I have gotten some good service out of it)... shouldn't be too tough to turn that 90 degrees to get the basic set up for your concrete finisher. Good luck/Merry Christmas!
