2003 Honda Civic Hybrid CVT Slippage Issues ???

12/24/2010 11:23 PM

I own a 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid which has the CVT transmission.

As 1000's of you know, they acquire a take off shudder when accelerating from a stop.

I had it to the dealership where they did a burnishing procedure, and replaced the fluid in the CVT. Worked for about 10,000 miles, then started coming back.

Has anyone ever added anything other than the $13/quart Honda cvt fluid, and had any luck.

Is there any friction modifiying additives, or replacement fluid other than Honda's, that works better.

Thanks !

Had a Daf with CVT what a rubbish system it had two large rubber driver belts

Drove an early ford fiesta with the metal belt CVT and that was rubbish, jerky pull away, weird braking felt like the engine was still pushing agaisnt the brakes

I wish you good luck fixing

Ouch. I seem to recall a number of CVT attempts over the years. They are getting better, but . . . .

I just can't see how increase in efficiency from running an engine at more or less a constant RPM justifies the extra complexity (not necessarily the number of parts, but rather the execution of a system with the requisite reliability and robustness).

Personally, I would never buy a car with a CVT until folks are routinely getting 150K or more out of them.

Wish you the best in your quest.

Your problem interests me. I owned a 2003 Honda City Vario (1.3 Liter) with a CVT transmission and experienced the same kind of problem. Inspite of many efforts by the Honda Service people it could not be rectified. As such I sold the car and bought a Honda City Steermatic (1.5 Liter) with CVT. After about 25000 kms I experienced the same problem. This time I asked for help from the Honda manufacturing facility in our country and they sent their engineer to diagnose the problem. After extensive examination in which nearly all the sensors and even the hydraulic unit on top of the gearbox were replaced on test it was decided that the multi-plate clutch for frontal movement which is controlled by the hydraulic unit is faulty. They were hesitant to open up the automatic gearbox but on my insistence it was disassembled and truly the clutch was found worn off abnormally. It could not be ascertained how it wore off abnormally whereas I had been particularly gentle with the car except for once when drove at a sustained 155 kmph on the highway. Anyway a new clutch assembly was fitted and the car which ran fine for another 15000 kms after which the same problem arose again. I have tried to contact Honda Japan but to no avail. I have been told by the local Honda dealership that there are a set of diaphragms in the gearbox unit which are faulty and need to be replaced. If any one can help from this point on I would be grateful.
