This is an interesting article on phononic crystals, analogous to photonic crystals in that there is a phononic bandgap produced by periodic acoustical properties.
This seems to be an application of the grand unification theory. If you can show that light and sound are related in the same manner electricity and magnetism are related, then intermeshing (like the electromagnet) will be amazing.

I don't think that light and sound are related in the same manner as electricity and magnetism. It's just that both Photons and Phonons are simaliar in that they are quantized and have discrete energies.
