I’ve Got to Try This!

12/25/2010 3:44 AM

It's years since I played about with a Jacobs Ladder. I burnt my transformer out when I cranked it up to 18KV which stopped my fun. But following a link from gideon and then having a rummage around the site I found this http://www.electricstuff.co.uk/jacobphone.html

I'm not bothered sound effects I want the flashes and bangs. An arc driving a slug of butane gas.

WOW that looks fun

I've only played with HV so far. 250,000V hurts (VanDerGraaf Generator) and 100,000V (Whimshurst machine with layden jars) put me flat on my back.

The problem with the Jacobs Ladder is the power from the transformer isn't just a one off belt. The transformer I set fire to was 150VA Instant Death!

I recall a number of years ago finding some oil ignition transformers in a dump. We attached some bent wire coat hangers to the high voltage terminals to make a Jacob's ladder. It worked pretty well, but not as good as this.

Tesla coiling and other such fun is what brought me to this forum. Pole pigs in the near future.
