Offshore Power Management

03/26/2007 9:10 PM

I was wondering for ultra deepwater drilling vessels, if power generated to these vessels could be accomplished by a seperate power generating vessel? As there is a need to generate massive amounts of power to drill in ultra deepwaters (10,000ft) . I think having a seperate power generating vessel would save space and as well as add to the safety.

Power generation and management is an integral part of the design of these very complex floating facilities. Large motors are used on the 'thrusters' which keep the facility precisely located above the bore-hole. Large motors are also used in the rotary drives, draw-works, and mud circulating systems.

Power generation is not the major risk area as it is well designed, conservatively rated, and impeccably maintained.

If you're using a US flagged drilling ship or an FPSO in US waters the power generation equipment must meet stringent ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) rules. Mega "extension cords" to other vessels are not acceptable.

Use big diesel electric units for power and thrust. Every one else does.
