Voltage Drop At Long Cable Runs

01/05/2011 1:34 AM

How to evaluate voltage drop on installed cable at distance 300 meters from a utility service of 75kva 230 to 238 vac secondary. Wire size is 22 mm.sq. When we try to start a 5HP motor voltage drops to 175volts. Is the cable good enough to lessen the drop? Terminals were tightened, cable splicing were also checked and we use solder less connectors as required . We're unable to test the 5hp water pump due to this. What are the possible causes and remedies. Our water pump (submersible type is brand new and was tested ok) prior to the installation at 300meters far from the main service.

It's all in British Standard 7671.

it wouldn't take much time you used to type this, instead if you could refer google or ask somebody or refer electrical books or search in CR4 for voltage drop calculation.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

I want to know that, you are providing the mains power from DG set or domestic supply.first you should have knowledge the resistance per meter of cable.let R ohm/m then resistance of cable will be 300 * R,if you are unable to know then come as a practical measure the resistance of cable , let R1 for 300 meter.now go for ratting of motor how much max'm current is given , let I.at V volts then ....

total voltage drop will be I * 300 * R volts

OR I * R volt =V1 volt(let)

then you have to give the voltage from mains (V +V1) volts.

for 25 to 30 volt can be adjust by increasing the speed of DG.

but for more drop or variations or Domestic supply ,it is required a Transformer.

For more...............

Plz give the specification of motor with voltage and current ratting.cable specification having there resistance for 300 meter or resistance per meter, mode of power availability.(DG or DMS).

thanking you.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

what about I am talking that is variable can be measure easly. Acatually I have no more data whatever is required to measure the approx. voltage drops.,that's why I am assuming only to convey him for measurement. He can calculate himself only throuth measuring the assumed variable parameter. If he will make available the assumed variable measument ,then it not required to assume.

thanking you.

Please search for " Simplified office solutions-Voltage drop calculator" & download the same.

Assuming 415 -3 phase at the secondary( 230 x 1.732) and for 5 hp mtoor for 300 m length the cable sizes are (1) Copper-35 sq.mm & aluminium 50 sq.mm ( for a voltage drop- below 4%).
