The Google and Yahoo Hiring Boom

08/01/2005 10:17 AM

Looks like Google and Yahoo are collecting a veritable who's who of tech. Google has Rob Pike, one of the creators of the Unix operating system. Another Google notable is Adam Bosworth, pioneer of the XML programming language. To attract this high level of talent, Google and Yahoo are using such perks as Gourmet Chefs and roller hockey.

The war is on

08/01/2005 10:27 AM

Expect 2005-2006 to be the center of the "Search Engine Wars". Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and others are going to spare no expense to come out on top. With the billions in advertising monies out there in the Search Engine world, chefs and massuesses are small prices to pay. Having the right brains and strategies in place will be key for survival and/or dominance. What scares me is if there is an eventual winner, the fall in spending by the giants, the layoffs and the reduction in advertising venues could hurt our economy in the same ways that the dot.com collapse of 2000-01 did.

I don't think this will hurt the economy in quite the same way. There is none of the rampant over speculation in the stock market that was going on the 1900s. The micro-economy of the search engine world will be shook up a bit, but that's it.
I hope.
