Optoelectronic Tweezers Round up Cells

08/01/2005 12:41 PM

Ever look through a microscope trying to catch up with live cells and microparticles floating around on a slide?
How frustrating!

"A new device developed by University of California, Berkeley engineers, and dubbed an "optoelectronic tweezer," will enable researchers to easily manipulate large numbers of single cells and particles using optical images projected on a glass slide coated with photoconductive materials."
The technique uses lasers to sort and manipulate the organization of cells and microparticles.
Aaaahh...now I can harass protozoa and ameobas with laser beams...

Tractor Beams

08/01/2005 1:26 PM

If you want state of the art for might manipulation you need to get an Arryx BioRyx® 200 System. Nice to see that someone is working on tractor beam technology. Lots of technical information on how the device traps materials with light.
