e-nose for medical clinical use

01/06/2011 9:27 AM

I am an clinical doctor and scientist working at Institute of clinical immunology and allergy in Hradec Kralove (Czech republic) and I am particularly interested in volatile organic compounds analysis in exhaled breath. I have read some research papers about using e-nose device: Cyranose C320, which was distributed by company Smiths-detection. Unfortunatelly it is no more on the market since February 2010. Is there any similar product (provided by different company), which could be used in clinical research in this field?
Thank you very much for reply.

Thank you very much for reply. I found a "Respiratory research" paper focused on this analysis, but as I saw, it is based on gas chromatography/mass spectrometry of sampled exhaled breath. This is very similar to exhaled breath condensate analysis, but I am looking for any electrochemical or nanosensor based equipment such as Cyranose C320 was (the techique is faster and very simple). Any idea?

If you google "electronic nose companies" you'll see there are many products out there.

If you google "electronic nose voc" you'll find which ones are recommended for your application.

Well, I was looking for any electrochemical or nanosensor VOC analysing instrument using google for few weeks, but in fact, almost all scientists (and I have some of them contacted by e-mail) use only Cyranose 320 or some prototype VOC analysers, which are not commercially available. Unfortunately, they are now solving similar problem with availability of any other instrument (instead of Cyranose). I have contacted a technical support of Smiths-detection and received only negative response, that Cyranose is no more on the market and no one similar product is distributed. That is the reason, why I am trying to find somebody, who has any experiences with this kind of analysis using different equipment. Anyway, thank you very much for any help.

I suggest you contact and discuss alternatives with the authors of this paper, who compared two commercial e-noses (not Cyranose) with an experimental prototype of their own.

This 2009 review paper compares e-nose with other spectroscopic techniques: the authors have a broad knowledge of the technology and may be able to help you with the choice of e-nose product.

I am glad to be able to tell you the C320 is available again. The product was licensed from Smiths Detection for manufacture by Optech Ventures in Pasadena California. You may contact them at this email address sfoote@intopsys.com. Or call this phone number 626-768-2623.

It's great news that the Cyranose device is available again from www.intopsys.com

There are so many publications on it, including many from 2011 and 2012 for lung cancer, asthma, COPD and even sleep apnea.
