%!#$*& Window Crank

01/07/2011 10:43 AM

I need to get the door panel off of my '79 Subaru Leone. It has been completely simple except for the window crank. I've searched and probed and cussed and begged but I can not find anything resembling a set screw around the sides and the face of the crank has no screw either.

I'm really trying not to destroy this poor old car but if I don't figure out how to get this crank off I'm going to have to cut the door panel so I can open the drivers door.

Does anyone have any bright ideas?

Some are held in place by a C-clip that can be accessed by pushing the door panel in to expose the back side of the knob.

Some just pull off.

Have you tried a Subaru forum?

I've done a cursory Subaru Forum search, but haven't yet really sat down to peruse them. Though I'm certain I would get good information from any one I may choose, I already know many of the minds at work here at CR4 so I have a better idea of whose advice I can trust and who is talking out their rear...

Good advice though, thank you.

all of the window cranks i have removed use a "U" shaped clip that goes into slots on two side of the crank just behind the flange that abuts the door panel. a stiff wire with a hook on the end can catch the clip to pull it out, be careful not to lose the clip it is a spring & will fly when released.

Looks like a spring clip.

Look for this, it's not real obvious.

Needle nose pliers will work too.

The trick I use is a thin longish flat blade screwdriver. I insert it between one leg of the clip and the handle. Working the blade under the leg of the clip, to lift it out of the "groove". Once one leg is out, it usually flicks off(keep an eye on the trajectory) There is not a lot of force required to flick off.

Once you've done it, you'll see how really easy it is to get the handles off.

The trick to replacing the handle is to fit the clip on first then push the handle onto the shaft. Just make sure that you have all the bits (that you took of) in place before you put the handle back on.

One of those would be nice... but I went with Tobugrynbak's screwdriver method which was quite effective and free.

There is a clip on the back side of the handle. You need a special tool that you can get at the auto parts store. It is really simple to remove, you slide the tool behind the handle and it spreads the clip and the handle pops off.
