Its a German thing.... it all started when boots were the only types of buckets available for storing beer in.

GA, and they won't fall in either do wonder if there is a rigidity thing too per volume and sq foot of sheet metal, but don't know. stacking is good

It may have been, that when the buckets of water froze, the ice would expand up and thus save the bucket from damage.
