Inductance Testing Mode

01/11/2011 12:40 AM

We are one of the manufature of Magnetic components like common mode chokes, inductors and transformers.

For most of the common chokes we are carry out testing for the Inductance measurements at parallel inductance mode( Lp) by using ferrite cores which is having the AL value and Permeabilty level as 5000nH and 8000 respectively. But while using the Nanoperm core material which is having the permeabilty level ~25,000 and our core supplier recommended to test the inductance at series inductance(Ls) mode instead of parallel inductance mode.

Can any one please advice on what basis we have to select the mode of testing(Lp/Ls) ?

Interesting question. I am surprised that no one has responded yet.

I would guess that either characteristics of the core or effects of the capacitance of the windings would cause the core being evaluated to perform more favorably in one test configuration than the other. This is only a guess and hopefully someone that knows the answer will take a few moments to respond.

I used to work for General Radio (40 years ago), and knew a lot about L-measurements. GR's Inductance bridges were "sold" to QuadTech. There are still people there who know how to test L and C, both parallel and serial.

Inductors with low Q can read very different in the other mode. This may be the reason, but why not ask the supplier? He would know why he recommended it.

Thanks for the reply. We are also under discussion with core supplier.
