Cable Selection For Low Voltage Application

Can anyone suggest me appropriate cable for :

1. transferring 0-10 V DC to a distance of 150 meter.

2. 4-20mA current transferring for the same distance

2c 0.75mm2 would do for either. This is an everyday installation in many industries.

"2 bits of wet string" would do for 4-20mA!

At 0.75mm2, the mechanical strength of the cable is the determining factor. Anything smaller might get damaged over those 150m, and therefore won't be worth the trouble of installing it.

As this is an analog signal, go for a screened twisted pair, with PVC/SWA/PVC overlying it for mechanical protection.

The 4-20mA won't be affected by interference and induction, which is why it is an industry standard signal; if 20mA goes in one end there's every chance of the same 20mA coming out the other....

In both cases, the resistance of the complete cable loop must be considered. The 0.75 mm2 cable previously suggested would give a loop resistance of 65 ohms. Your signal source may not be strong enough to drive through that much burden. The source for the voltage signal would not be harmed, but the value on the receiving end would not be 0-10 volts. If the 4-20mA signal is generated by a constant-current amplifier, it will raise its output voltage in an attempt to overcome the line resistance plus the receiver load resistance (usually a dropping resistor of 250 ohms). If the source is not designed to drive through 315 ohms, it may damage itself trying.

For that distance I would use at least 2.5 mm2 twisted shielded pair cable, with the shield terminated to ground only on the source end.
