Steel Specification as Percent "IN HEAT"

01/12/2011 9:29 AM

Wikipeda details ASTM A500 composition as % by weight "in heat". Specifying composition as "% by weight" is easy to understand. I don't recall ever seeing a specification adding "in heat". How hot is the "heat" and what difference does it make?

The link is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASTM_A500

Thank you,

Bruce

AISI steel chemistry is specified by both heat (ladle) chemical ranges and limits as well as check analysis tolerances. Check analysis applies to finished products while heat is the chemistry in the ladle at the time of pour or melting.

When the steel is in the ladle it's chemistry should be "fresh" and the molten steel has had less time to react with air than cold steel, but I would expect this difference to be minor.

Are "in heat" measurements a little different from cold measurements or is this just kind of a "fine print" thing stating at what stage of the manufacturing process the composition was tested?

Thank you,

Bruce

"Heat" in this context means one ladle/batch/melt/pour of steel. Each heat is analyzed for alloy content, and numbered separately for mill test reports (MTRs).

It sounds like the "heat" concept is important to the logistics of batch control and batch production. For those of us that consider A36 and A500 to be interchangeable we probably don't need to worry about it.

Thanks,

Bruce
