The very few electrical engineers who are capable of R&D immediately after graduating from school, do not have to ask these questions. I wish you luck in finding a job. If you thought your final exams were difficult, just wait for your job interview.

With a name like Mike, you are probably in the Western part of the world, so my own experience may not be applicable where you live.

As soon as my induction program of 6 months was over, i was asked to join the R&D, and to design and make an Air Circuit Breaker. Somewhat based on a good but obsolete English one which was lying around.Wow. As i studied the blessed thing, i realised that there was very little electrical about it, but lots of mechanical engineering.

Springs - what loads P1 and P2 at L1 and L2? Energy required to close and trip ?

Mechanism links - what material, hardness, heat treatment ? Any special process like grinding or honing required on the latch surface ? Should the latch be thru-hardened or case-hardened ? If the latter, what depth?

Etc etc.

Unless you are a part of large team in a large company, you will need to learn all about silicon steels, high-speed punching processes, bearings, shaft materials... a million things.

But believe me, it will be fun. Good luck

Mike,

That's up to the capricious whim of the employer.
